Sunset in SE1

So I’ve taken to these sunset strolls along the River Thames when I have the time. And I try to make the time. A friend said recently ‘I’ve seen sunsets before.’ My immediate thought was, yes, I’ve seen a few sunsets in my time, but somehow seeing another one is always worth it.

When I walked up to London Bridge to take some shots there were some guys there probably having had some post-work evening drinks. One guy (seeming surprised) said to his colleagues. ‘Hey, that was well worth the walk from the pub…’

Yes. Yes it always is… DSCF7080 DSCF7082 DSCF7085 DSCF7086 DSCF7088 DSCF7091

“I confess I do not believe in time. I like to fold my magic carpet, after use, in such a way as to superimpose one part of the pattern upon another. Let visitors trip. And the highest enjoyment of timelessness-in a landscape selected at random – is when I stand among rare butterflies and their food plants. This is ecstasy, and behind the ecstasy is something else, which is hard to explain. It is like a momentary vacuum into which rushes all that I love. A sense of oneness with sun and stone. A thrill of gratitude to whom it may concern-to the contrapuntal genius of human fate or to tender ghosts humoring a lucky mortal.”

Vladimir Nabokov – Speak, Memory

And a reminder that, as someone who has spent 0ver 10 years reading Russian literature, it is about time I read some Nabokov!

I’m attempting to improve my photography of sunsets. I know it may seem trite, but I honestly think that life is too short not to enjoy them, when and if you can, and since I live near the river, there’s plenty of opportunities… Also, yesterday wasn’t one of my best days, just a lot of things getting me down, so this is just a reminder to me that the world is a beautiful place, and I’ve much to be grateful for.

For some reason I managed to upload these in reverse, so if you want to see them in order, scroll down and work your way up!

I often work weekends so this is a few photos of a stroll in the park after work, my walk home, and views from the window of my flat. A beautiful fine day which we haven’t seen many of this year… I was rather tired after my walk so didn’t manage to go on a sunset walk, but as you can see, it would have been worth the effort! Next time…
